5. SUMMARY TITLE/RECOMMENDATION: (A concise sentence, as it will appear on the Council Agenda)
An ordinance amending Tacoma Municipal Code 1.18.010 to reduce the term of the office
of Deputy Mayor from two years to one year.
6. BACKGROUND INFORMATION/GENERAL DISCUSSION: (Why is this request necessary? Are there legal
requirements? What are the viable alternatives? Who has been involved in the process?)
The office of Deputy Mayor was established in 1960, with the passage of Ordinance
No. 16506. The initial term for the office was four years. In 1982, with the passage of
Ordinance No. 2261 1, the term was reduced to two years. Owing to term limits and time
demands otherwise placed upon Council Members, it has been determined that a
one-year term for Deputy Mayor would be more practical.
