1 BY REQUEST OF COUNCIL MEMBER SILAS
2 WHEREAS the City has been involved in the Sister City Program for over
3 30 years, and

WHEREAS a citizens committee interested in establishing a Sister City
relationship with a city in South Africa concurs that the City of George is the most

7 appropriate city for this relationship, and
8 WHEREAS, in 1997, the Mayor of Tacoma and the Mayor of George
9 exchanged documents of interest and intent to establish a relationship, and
I 0 WHEREAS the opportunity is present for this Sister City relationship to
I 1
increase economic and cultural exchanges and educational opportunities for both

1 3 cities, and
14 WHEREAS the criteria for establishing a Sister City have been reviewed
1 5 and the South Africa Sister City Steering Committee has provided an overview on
1 6 George, South Africa, to the Sister Cities Council, and

WHEREAS the City of George, South Africa, has been unanimously
1 8
19 approved by the Sister Cities Council for recommendation to the City Council;
20 Now, Therefore,
21 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TACOMA:
22 That the Council of the City of Tacoma does hereby designate the City of

George, South Africa, as a Sister City.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, by this designation, the City of Tacoma

2 hereby indicates its intention to participate to the fullest extent possible with
3 George in the carrying on of Sister City policies.
4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a Tacoma Sister City Committee for
George, South Africa, should be established, whose membership shall be

designated by further resolution of this Council.

Authorize the establishment of a sister city relationship and the creation of a Tacoma Sister City Committee for George, South

Over the past two years. a local ad hoc citizen's steering committee has explored and researched the establishment of a sister
city relationship in South Africa. Criteria has been reviewed, documents and correspondence have been exchanged with
George, South Africa. The Tacoma-Pierce County Sister Cities Council has had a presentation by the steering committee and
is recommending the establishment of a relationship with George. The Mayor of George has also conveyed their interest and
intent to establish a relationship with Tacoma.

Dear Mayor Ebersole and Council Members:
At its meeting of September 24, the Sister Cities Council heard a presentation from
Mr. Bill Wade and Mr. George Stokes, representing the ad hoc South Africa Sister
City Committee. As you may be aware, the Committee has been working
together for approximately two years in seeking the establishment of a Tacoma
Sister City relationship with a City in South Africa. I understand that Council
Member Silas has also been an active participant on the South Africa Sister City
Committee.
Following an excellent presentation highlighting the similarities and potential
opportunities for both cities, the Sister Cities Council unanimously passed a motion
to recommend to the Tacoma City Council the establishment of a Sister City
relationship with the City of George, South Africa.
I would like to commend the Committee for their diligence and commitment to
the Sister City ideals.

The City Council of George recently considered the possibility of entering into a Sister
City relationship with the City of Tacoma.
I have pleasure to inform you that the said proposal was accepted and a committee
under the chairmanship of the Mayor, Councillor S E Opperman will be in contact with

it will be most interesting to find out more about other ways and means of achieving
